One Pastor’s Story

We had a $270,000 ‘return’ on a $10,000 ‘investment’ of The Sparkle Box books.

Pastor Sean Kelly, Greenford Christian Church

In 2013, Pastor Sean Kelly with Greenford Christian Church in Greenford, Ohio had an “aha moment” when The Sparkle Box landed on his desk. This book fit perfectly with the sermon series he was planning for November, “Change the World.” He was seeking a high-impact, low-cost item to spark interest in a special offering for missions Greenford Christian already supported, and he felt the book could be just the thing. Soon thereafter, the church purchased 1,000 books—one for every family in the Greenford Christian congregation.

Christmas 2013

Each family, upon receiving the book, was challenged to do their part to help change the world. The church’s specific objective was to raise money to provide filters for clean water through Compassion International’s Water of Life campaign and to pack and ship meals for Lifeline Christian Mission in Haiti.

The offering goal was $130,000yet $270,000 was raised—with no large or extraordinary single gift but with everyone participating, even children emptying their piggy banks.

Christmas 2014

Greenford Christian used again as their Christmas missions initiative. With a goal of sponsoring 150 children through a Compassion church plant partnership in Haiti, they almost doubled that number, sponsoring 277 children.

They also raised more than $67,000 for the Big Reach Center of Hope’s Food for Thought backpack program, a local charity providing food for children in need. Through The Sparkle Box program, the church family was blessed as they blessed others, raising money for local and global needs.

The Sparkle Box program brought our church together in a way I’ve never witnessed in the 13 years I’ve been here. We all looked at Christmas differently. This book and program helped our church members see that each of us can play a role in changing the world.
